Yahoo! are launching some more very cool location-based features based on WOE (Where On Earth) IDs. The Yahoo! Internet Location Platform (which can currently be previewed) “is designed to facilitate spatial interoperability and geographic discovery; users can traverse the spatial hierarchy, identify the geography relevant to their users and their business, and in turn, unambiguously geotag, geotarget, and geolocate data across the Web.”
Did you get that?!
“In simple terms, the Service allows you to look up the unique identifier of any given location on Earth - called the Where on Earth ID, or WOEID. It also allows you to resolve a WOEID you have received from a third party apps such as Fire Eagle to the place it represents.”
However, the the part that interests me the most is how it can be used with Flickr. For more inforamtion on that , check out the post by Dan Catt here - He give a nice run-down of the possibilities.
It’s definatley and exciting development and a step in the right direction for the geoworld - Will be interesting to see what developers do with this! Yahoo! seem to be taking the lead with the location-based apps.
